My musical life is split between two wonderful activities, performing and teaching. I play regularly with four orchestras: I’m a violinist with Boston Ballet, and principal violist of Boston Lyric Opera, Boston Landmarks Orchestra, and the Bach, Beethoven & Brahms Society. I’m often asked which I prefer, violin or viola, and my answer is “I love them both!” I enjoy the excitement of virtuosic violin parts, and also being more inside the music as a violist. As the performing arts gradually return to normal, I’m looking forward to playing with my friends and colleagues again, enriching our own lives and those of our audiences.
I’ve been teaching violin and viola for most of my adult life. I love it, because it provides a different kind of excitement, and continually poses different challenges. Every student is unique, and my teaching will change to reflect each student’s learning style. When a student masters a new bow-stroke, or develops a beautiful vibrato, or recognizes the genius in one of my favorite works, it’s so satisfying!
For beginners, I am Suzuki trained and certified, but for those who can already read music, I’m comfortable with more traditional methods, the way I learned. I have many years experience teaching all skill levels, from beginner to advanced, and all ages, from little ones to seniors. I have been successful in preparing many students for District auditions, and I’m happy to work on orchestral parts, as there is much to be learned from their study. I teach mostly classical music, but I love good fiddling, and I’ll explore tunes with anyone who feels the same way.
At the end of each school year I hold a recital, with professional piano accompaniment. My students have performed everything from Suzuki Twinkle through Mozart concertos and solo Bach. At the end of each recital, I play something too—why should the students be the only ones getting nervous?!
And if you’re already a performer, amateur or professional, please click the “Arrangements” tab above to check out my string quartet and flute trio arrangements. You’ll find Strauss waltzes, Scarlatti sonatas, marches, traditional Jewish songs, and more. I work from full scores, and as someone who often plays inner voices, I make sure that ALL the players have lots to do! These arrangements are suitable for use in weddings and other events, or just for having fun.
